Is there a relationship between diet and ADHD?

There is a huge correlation. Nutrition is one of the most significant components. I could write a ton about this – and I have in the past – but here are some highlights:

  • Your brain is made up mostly of fat. People who don’t consume enough fat tend to have poor brain health whether they’re aware of it or not.
  • Low blood sugar levels contribute to inattentiveness and other ADHD symptoms, so you need to stay fed.
  • You also need to consume a lot of water. Water is essential for overall health.
  • Inflammation in the brain can contribute to neurological conditions including ADHD. People often aren’t aware of when they’re experiencing inflammation, unless it’s obvious, as it is when one bangs part of their body. (Swelling and bruising = inflammation.) Because of this, it’s best to avoid potentially inflammatory foods.
  • Overall, we know that sugar contributes to a ton of health issues. People with ADHD should especially avoid it.
  • A healthy gut = a healthy brain. Neurotransmitters are created in the gut. See this post.

Because of the high fat, low-inflammatory nature of it, some people with ADHD follow a ketogenic or keto-ish diet.
